All Pangaea Natural Stone Thin Veneers meet the national ASTM and CSA codes to be considered a light weight thin veneer. Natural stone thin veneers must be 15 lbs (6.8kgs) per square foot or less to be considered a light weight veneer. If the stone veneers are 15 lbs (6.8kgs) per square foot or less, then no load bearing support is necessary. Therefore Pangaea Natural Stone Thin Veneers are considered an aesthetic verses a structural detail. Please note the following styles of stone veneers with their corresponding weight averages:

  • Ledgestone approximately 9 to 11 lbs (4.1 to 5 kgs) per square foot
  • Microledge approximately 11 to 13 lbs (5 to 5.9 kgs) per square foot
  • Castlestone approximately 9 to 12 lbs (4.1 to 5.9 kgs) per square foot
  • Roman Castle approximately 9 to 11 lbs (4.1 to 5 kgs) per square foot
  • Fieldstone approximately 9 to 12 lbs (4.1 to 5.9 kgs) per square foot

The thickness of our Natural Stone Thin Veneers are between ¾” to 1 ¼” with the exception of Microledge which is 1” to 1 ½”

Yes, all Pangaea Natural Stone Thin Veneers, Full Bed Stones, Paving Stones and Architectural Stones are tested for Freeze/Thaw stability, Compressive Break Load, Flexural Strength, Water Absorption, etc. As a result of new product introductions, performance test may have not yet been finalized. Please check back with us periodically.

All Pangaea products are quarried from the earth and have proven to be colorfast. This is very important for the aesthetic detail of your project. Subsurface layers of stone may be exposed during installation when a mason is cutting and tooling the stone during installation or when you, as a homeowner, may be performing general maintenance from time to time due to natural weathering. Pangaea Natural Stone’s are colorfast and will remain true for the life cycle of the product.

Pangaea Natural Stone does not recommend the use of Muriatic acid for cleaning the stones surface either after install or during periodic cleaning. Muriatic acid may etch and discolor the surface of a stone as some Pangaea Stones such as Black Rundle or Azul Limestone contain large amounts of carbon. Carbon has adverse reactions to low pH products such as Muriatic acid.

For masons and homeowners, the best product to use is a combination of vinegar with water. Always test the strength of the combination on a sample stone prior to use.

All of Pangaea’s products originate from natural stone quarries and therefore color of natural stone consistently change. However, stones that you select from a dealer’s showroom or view on any commercial or residential project will be true to what you will receive on your project.

Pangaea insures product consistency and aesthetics through its quality control experts. Pangaea has quality control experts ensure that colors are well blended to accurately represent the product when packaged. Pangaea has implemented best practices to insure quality control. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the masonry installer to facilitate design control for any project.

With Pangaea Natural Stone products you do not have to worry about efflorescence as natural stone is not the source of efflorescence. Efflorescence occurs when water moving through a wall or other structures, like brick or fire stop mortars, is driven out as a result of the heat of hydration as cement stones are being formed. This brings water to the surfaces that are not commonly bound as part of the cement stone. When the water evaporates it leaves the salt behind. The salt forms a white fluffy deposit that can normally be brushed off. The white deposit is referred to as efflorescence. Since primary efflorescence brings out salts that are not ordinarily part of the cement stone, it is only and an aesthetic rather than a structural concern.

Pangaea Natural Stone Thin Veneers have very minimal water absorption through the stone which substantially reduces or virtually eliminates problems with efflorescence. If efflorescence does occur on the surface of the stone it can be easily cleaned with brushing or simply with a mixture of vinegar and water. Do not use an acidic solution on your stone veneers to remove efflorescence but rather a higher pH solution, because the stone may not be acid resistant.

There is no warranty on natural stone because it is a product of nature. Blemishes, fissures, striations, veining, color variations, etc are natural characteristics of the beauty of natural stone and are not considered "product defects".

From time to time failures do occur mainly due to the incorrect installation of Pangaea Stone. Pangaea strongly recommends that customer contact their local Pangaea Stone dealer and arrange a certified installation professional However, Pangaea prides itself on serving its customers and therefore are always available to help customers find solution for any situation that a customer may find challenging.

Pangaea Natural Stone Thin Veneers are fabricated and packaged for ease of installation and are much more masonry friendly in comparison to any other natural stone thin veneer products for the following reasons:

  1. GripSet™ Technology. Pangaea pioneered GripSet™ Technology which greatly aid an installation professional for adhering Pangaea Stone to a vertical sub straight.
  2. Our thin veneers are primarily fabricated from natural sandstone. Sandstone is granular, making the stone easy to tool, shape and fit where required during the installation process. Mortar also bonds very well to sandstone allowing both “bottom-up” and “top-down” installation. Typically masonry professional prefer “top-down” installation as it keep the veneer surface free of falling debris during installation.
  3. Silica based stones . Silica is acid resistant by nature. Therefore Pangaea sandstones are very easy to clean after installation and easy to maintain for the life cycle of the product. Acid based products such Muriatic acid may be used for cleaning (in small amounts diluted with water). However insure that prior to use on large areas as small sample size be tested.
  4. Design control – All Pangaea Stones are packaged with design control which means that each layer of stone veneers that are packaged within each crate has an accurate representation of color and size. This allows an installation professional to install Pangaea Stone Veneers right from the crate verses having to lay out 50 to 60 sqft of product to insure size and color are balanced.

There remains NO THREAT OF SILICOSIS from the sandstone for following reasons:

  • a. Sandstone is lithified (compacted) sand called Sandstone
  • b. Sand is pure silica oxide (SiO2), the most common mineral on our planet
  • c. Compacted silica does not pose any silicosis health hazard
  • d. Silicosis threat is only posed when we are drilling, sawing and or blasting the sandstone
  • e. The threat of silicosis in the mining industry is minimized by using water during drilling and sawing of the sandstone to contain the dust particles.

GripSet™ Technology was pioneered by Pangaea and is proprietary to its veneer products. GripSet™ Technology increases the surface area where mortar is applied and increases the co-efficient of friction which allows the stone to attach quickly to a vertical substrate. Pangaea’s GripSet™ Technology is ideal for seismic areas of our continent.

Typically natural stone thin veneer are smooth on the back surface making the stone more time consuming and a little more challenging to install.

The fabrication of Pangaea Stone emits minimal carbon into our environment due to our production process. The natural stone waste from Pangaea’s fabrication process is recycled for the construction industry. All of the water used for the fabrication of Pangaea stone is 100% recycled. Currently Pangaea is working with GHG Climate Team, LLC. In Sacramento, CA to evaluate the carbon footprint emissions of its fabrication and transportation process.

Pangaea Stone Veneers and related products are virtually maintenance free. From time to time you may want to clean your stones surface to remove any natural weathering that may have occurred over time, other than this, there is no maintenance required. Pangaea Natural Stone Veneers require the least maintenance of any cladding product or paving stone product available in the marketplace today.

Pangaea Natural Stone Thin Veneers are very competitive when it comes to the supply and installation of our products for the following reasons:

  • All Pangaea Natural Stone Thin Veneers are sold as a dry stack. Pangaea does not sell its products with mortar joints. Typically customers have to invest an additional 10% to 15% with Pangaea’s competitors to extract the same yield as Pangaea Natural Stone Thin Veneers. Pangaea’s high degree of quality control insure more material is usable and there is substantially less waste during installation in comparison to its natural stone competitors.

Customers should consider both “capital costs” and “operational costs” when considering price. The “capital cost” is the initial cost of the materials and installation for your project. The “operational cost” is the cost of maintaining the product for the life cycle of the product. Pangaea Natural Stone Thin Veneers may have a slightly higher “capital cost”, however there are no “operational costs” associated with the product over the life cycle of the product.
